Susan B and The Company

First, some housekeeping: I know what you're wondering, namely, "Where's the episode of PrisonTube you promised us last week, Daryl?" Well, we had some production delays due, in part, to a friend's wedding last weekend which kept Lauren (our master editor) busier than usual. He's on it, but we'll probably save that episode of PrisonTube for the next break in the Prison Break broadcast schedule.

Now to Susan B and The Company--I have a new Conspiracy Corner thought I wanted to bounce off you:

Since Lincoln first met Susan B, I've assumed she was yet another henchman (henchwoman? henchperson?) working on The Company's behalf to coerce Lincoln (and, indirectly, Michael) into breaking Whistler out of Sona. It seemed to make sense--after all, The Company has a long reach and seemingly endless resources. They've also got a track record of playing as dirty as they need to in pursuit of their goals. So Susan B fits the pattern.

But I got to thinking: What if Susan B is actually working on behalf of some other party that might also be interested in getting Whistler out of Sona? E.g., organized crime (Panamanian Mafia?) or some other organization with an ample supply of resources and ruthlessness.

Here's why I think that scenario might make sense:
  1. It explains why the Company Guy comes to Sona to talk to Michael--telling him that there are all sorts of resources to aid him if he can just break out of Sona. If Susan B was working on The Company's dime, why would they bother to talk to Michael at Sona--just let her do her thing (she's obviously effective).
  2. It explains why Susan B would kill Sara to motivate Lincoln. I don't think The Company would have taken that route. They've got a long history with Michael by now--they know what he's capable of and how he'd react if he found out they killed Sara. They know what she means to him. It would be counterproductive for The Company to kill Sara at this point. But another organization might not know as much about Michael and might instead be relying on fear and threats to motivate Lincoln (and Michael). And again, why would Company Guy drive out to Sona to encourage Michael to escape if he was just going to turn around and kill Sara to make the same point?
  3. The bird book. It has bothered me--ever since the scene where Whistler receives a mail envelope with the bird book inside and a hand-written note ("You're running out of time" or something similar). I couldn't come up with a good reason why The Company would send the book back to Whistler. It's obviously important or he wouldn't have locked it up in a safe deposit box. But what if it wasn't important to Susan B? What if she (or her organization) want Whistler out of Sona for some other reason (perhaps related to the murder he's alleged to have committed?). Then it would make sense for Susan B to casually use the bird book to send a message to Whistler in prison. She knew it had been stored in a safe deposit box--but the book isn't important to her; Whistler is. Here, James, you can have your book. It's you I'm waiting for.
  4. Finally (related to #2 above), the whole head-in-a-box thing doesn't seem like something The Company would do. That's a primitive way to motivate someone and it leaves loose ends (like, say, A HEAD IN A BOX). That's not the signature of a Company operation, is it?
I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Am I way off base? Or is this old news and everyone else already sees things this way? Let me know what you think!

Interesting hypothesis....but how did susan b know that linc gave her a fake bird guide in the first place??and remember that linc tried to save sara & lj..so they killed sara to let him know that they're not joking....and how the hell did the get lj from america(he was under the protection of his grandfather's "ANTI-COMPANY")???
looks like there are alot of flaws in your conclusion...but nice try!

I think Susan B expected that Linc would give her a fake bird book (and remember she said they compared the handwritten notes in the book to samples of Linc's handwriting to confirm it was fake?). Still, the book *was* obviously of some relevence to her since we see "STAMPEDE" written on a notepad in Susan B's hand when she calls Linc in last Monday's episode--a note from the book maybe?

You make a good point about LJ. Unless he independently decided to strike out to be with his dad (thus losing his grandfather's protection). But as for Sara I still maintain that while killing her was (as you pointed out) revenge for Linc's attempted rescue, it still doesn't seem like The Company's M.O.

You've made me think--and you're right: there are some gaps in my hypothesis. I'll have to go back to the drawing board and reconsider!

From FOX, Episode 305 "Interference" Recap...

"Susan gets a call from General Pad Man, who is behind her kidnapping and blackmail attempts – and calls her Gretchen. She's freelance, but he'll hold her accountable if their plan goes wrong."

I don't remember a call, although I'll admit I'm usually only half watching, but anyways, this shows a connection between Susan B. and the Company...

I think Susan is definitely part of the company but I love the idea of her being freelance. Sorta like a replacement for Bill Kim's failure, now Padman is outsourcing.

And Sarabeth is correct; that scene was supposed to air on Monday but it was cut and supposedly will be used for a future episode.

A minor plot gap supports your theory D.

In the episode were Lincoln finds Sarah and LJ, and they kill Sarah. In that episode Michael and Lincoln are talking alot on the phone. Michael with LeCheros (SC!) phone and Lincoln on his.

Thing is; wouldnt the company have had the resources to tap and survalance Lincolns mobile phone? Even if that is a Panama phonenumber, they would for sure be able to listen in on any call. I think thats kinda weak. I meen, in S01 they could pinpoint LJs location two times in one episode. And we could here they listen to the phonecall in their car.

I was thinking about Susan NOT beeing a Company girl. But as soon as she said to Lincoln that the Company had done a test on hes hand writing i let it go. The lack of phone survalence was my best hint to this theory.

Happy times at that drawing board D.

PS! cant wait for next Prison Tube, and episode 6 of PB S03.

She knew it was fake because the note in it matched Linc's handwriting. She said it hadn't changed one bit since high school. Therefore he had tried to fool her but she clearly wasn't buying. Thinking about it, was there a note in there? I can't remember. If there wasn't then I'm clueless as to how she knew the bird book Linc gave her was fake the first time around.

i like the theories that i read here, but I do have one qualm. in regards to giving Whistler the book, maybe she just figured it contained his notes the the location of the person they say they are looking for. that scene in the show did not catch me off guard at all, though it was weird of her to be so forceful in taking it from Linc just to give it to whistler.

i think it's that simple explanation. she gave him the book so he could figure out where that person is.

let me know what you think.

Your theory makes sense. I think we all just assumed she was Company. I am just now realizing that if Susan B was in any way connected with The Company, there would have been scenes between her and Padman or the man who approached Michael in Sona or anyone in The Company at all. No such scenes have occured. So it just may be that two different factions want Whistler out of Sona for different purposes. They are probably competing and they are on a "time" schedule, hence the note. WHistler probably knows why, but he will continue to lie to Mike and Sophia, cause he's def not who he says he is.

THEY KILLED SARAH NOOOOO!!!!! WTF ..TOTALLY NOT COOL. BUT ANYWAYS WHAT IS UP WITH WHISTLER? IS HE GOOD OR BAD? I THINK THAT HE IS PART OF THE COMPANY AND THAT HE IS TRYING TO COVER UP SOMETHING. ESPECIALLY SINCE THE COMPANY WAS SENDING HIM STUFF, THEY MAKE IT SEEM AS THOUGH HE IS IN ON SOMETHING THAT MICHAEL ISNT. I STILL NEED TO SEE 3.6 - 3.8 BUT IM NOT SURE IF I LIKE WHERE THIS SEASON IS GOING.
